Dutch court: Netherlands Gambling Authority was justified in denying license to Malta-based operator
The District Court of The Hague has denied the appeal of L&L Europe Ltd against the Netherlands Gambling Authority's decision to deny a remote gambling license to the Malta-based operator.
A former shareholder of L&L Europe, Yorgen Fenech, has been credibly linked with the 2017 murder of investigative reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia. The court agreed with the gambling regulator that L&L Europe had made incomplete and even false statements regarding the ongoing involvement of Fenech with the plaintiff.
As a result of the incomplete statements of L&L Europe, the Netherlands Gambling Authority was justified in using its discretionary powers to deny a license to the plaintiff, the court ruled, regardless of the precise extent of Fenech's ongoing involvement with the applicant.
Google search suggestions direct site visitors to illegal gambling offerings
People in the Netherlands who are using Google to search for “online casino” are automatically prompted to refine their search to “online casino zonder CRUKS” or “online casino buitenland,” CasinoNieuws reports.
In both cases, visitors are directed to illegal offers that do not make use of the Netherlands’ national exclusion register (CRUKS) and which are not licensed in the Netherlands.

Austria likely to regulate online gambling in 2025, experts say
According to industry stakeholders, 2025 could be the year that Austria moves to end its current online casino monopoly and award licenses to multiple private operators.
With the 15-year license for current monopoly-holder Casinos Austria due to expire on 30 September 2027, a window of opportunity for opening the online gambling market is emerging this year.
Simon Priglinger-Simader, vice president of the Austrian Betting and Gaming Association (OVWG), said he was “optimistic for the first time ever” that Austria would finally move to an open market model for online gambling.
Italy's senate to discuss proposal to lift betting advertising ban
Italy's “Commissione Cultura del Senato” (Senate Cultural Commission) is preparing to discuss a proposal that could lift the ban on betting sponsorships in sporting events.
The discussions are part of a broader football reform initiative aiming to address the financial challenges faced by Serie A clubs since the implementation of the 2018 gambling advertising ban. As a result of the ban, Serie A clubs are currently missing out on an estimated €100m in annual sponsorship income.
Swedish government to review Gambling Act
Sweden's government has announced a review of the country's gambling act with the aim of closing a loophole that allows unlicensed operators to accept Swedish customers if they avoid using the Swedish language or Swedish currency.
The move follows calls from the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS), which argued that the loophole undermines the integrity of the country’s licensed gambling market.
Netherlands Gambling Authority chair: “Stricter age and deposit limits could be counterproductive”
Netherlands Gambling Authority Chair, Michel Groothuizen has written a personal blog post in which he warns that stricter age and deposit limits could have a negative effect on overall consumer protection by driving an increasing number of players to the illegal market.
Last week, the Dutch government announced an overhaul of the country's Remote Gambling Act, including cross-operator deposit limits and an increased age limit (21) for high-risk games of chance.
However, the Dutch regulator, using an improved method to estimate the size of the country's illegal online market, also found that market channelization in terms of GGR is currently as low as 49%.
Further restrictions could harm the onshore market even further, Groothuizen warns.
